The Old 97′s hit People’s Court on October 14TH. I doubt I’ll make it over but it will, undeniably, be a good show. You kids over in the Des Moines/Ames/Cliver area, make it over. Tickets are $20 a pop and you won’t be disappointed if you’ve got a decent appreciation for music, especially of the alt. country/rock type.

This first semester of the 2008 school year has me spinning a bit, in a good way. I’ve always been a member of the “you can do anything you set your mind on” pool of society. On the other hand, I was also a member of the “path of least resistance” club, which at times in the past has led me to give up on important things in life. You know, like high school?

But now, after taking the scenic route to higher education, I know only two things for sure: I want to transfer to a University after my two years at Hawkeye Community are over and I’m interested in media. That leaves me with a few variables to consider while here at Hawkeye.

The first is what do I want to achieve here? I knew that I would have to take some classes here because of my previous academic history or lack there of, but do I just want to come out of here a liberal arts transfer? I initially had planned on working towards Information Systems Management but that’s not very appealing anymore. I can try to take as many media oriented classes here at Hawkeye as possible or I could try a business major. I really enjoy my management class.

The second is what kind of media do I want to end up in? I love movies and I’m fascinated by media production. I think it’s something I could be involved in and be good at. Do I want to move out of state to attend a film school of some sort eventually? Is that feasible? Or do I want to do something more familiar. More concrete.

Do I want to write? I enjoy writing and I feel relatively skilled at it. Iowa is the perfect home for a writer. The Pulizer prize-winning Des Moines Register is the heartland’s best paper. The University of Iowa has an internationally famous Writer’s Workshop.

I’m not sure. I should probably figure it out relatively soon though. Not this week, however. Weezer concert tomorrow night!

A few weeks ago I had a conversation with a current Jesup High School student about partying, Facebook, & what the school’s been doing lately. Students frequently use Facebook while at school, which is no surprise – more used MySpace when I attended, but it just makes sense that they would be logging in to social networks while on the computers. It’s been too easy to get past filters in the past and I’m not sure they’re even filtering Facebook – they wern’t when I was there.

Unfortunately the school’s been tracking the browsing habits of some and actually penalizing students for being in images of a party that is obviously in progress. Regardless of whether you think this is right or wrong, it’s happening. Which leads us to this video and the article after the jump from MSNBC…

Cops bust teens’ root-beer kegger

Dozens of high schoolers forced to take breath tests

WAUSAU, Wis. – Cars lining the street. A house full of young people. A keg and drinking games inside. Police thought they had an underage boozing party on their hands.

But though they made dozens of teens take breath tests, none tested positive for alcohol. That’s because the keg contained root beer.

The party was held by a high school student who wanted to show that teens don’t always drink alcohol at their parties. It has gained fame on YouTube.com.

Dustin Zebro, 18, said he staged the party after friends at D.C. Everest High School got suspended from sports because of pictures showing them drinking from red cups.

The root-beer kegger was “to kind of make fun of the school,” he said. “They assumed there was beer in the cups. We just wanted to have some root beer in red cups and just make it look like a party, but there actually wasn’t any alcohol.”

Zebro purchased a quarter-barrel of 1919 Classic American Draft Root Beer, and by 10 p.m. Saturday, the scene outside his rural Wausau home had all the makings of a teen drinking party — cars, noise and kids.

Kronenwetter Police Chief Daniel Joling said an officer was dispatched to the home March 1 on a complaint of cars blocking the road.

Juveniles began coming out of the house after the officer used his squad car’s loudspeaker to warn that cars would soon be towed, Officer Jason Rasmussen wrote in his report.

Nearly 90 breath tests were done, and officers even searched locked rooms for hiding teens.

“It was a tremendous waste of time and manpower, but we still had a job to do, and our officers did it,” Joling said. “If one kid had come there, even hadn’t drank there, but had come there and had been drinking and had left and crashed and burned, then what would the sentiment be? Why didn’t the police check everybody out?”

School Superintendent Kris Gilmore did not immediately return a message Friday.

I’ve just updated from WordPress 2.3.3 to 2.5. Did I break anything?

Keep in mind you can always register a subscriber account here, for free, to get notifications of new posts, updates, & an optional newsletter.

I’m considering adding some new blog authors to Postblink to get more diverse content on the site. If you’re a twenty-something that enjoys writing and will make an effort to post once a week or every other week about life, music, movies, tech, & other entertainment feel free to shoot me an email detailing who are and what you feel you can add to the site. Currently there is no ad revenue being generated on Postblink – so you would be doing this for fun, without any compensation other than the outlet of expression via writing.

In other news, I have labs, labs, and more labs for my fall semester. A+ Cert, CISCO Networking/Routers, Network Math/DataTransportation. Also Math for Liberal Arts & Intro to Psych. Fun times??

Recently I’ve been meaning to write more in here. As I’ve expressed in earlier posts, there hasn’t been a whole lot to write about this winter. I could write about how it snowed. And then snowed again. And then snowed some more. I could write about having to push my parents vehicles out of the snow when they get stuck. Where do they get struck? The drive way of course. They’ve lived in Iowa their entire lives but still haven’t figured out how to not get stuck.

Anyways, I started going through old posts and I found one I had written about starting the coursework for getting my GED. Since I’m not sure I’ve ever posted this – I did complete and obtain my GED. In fact, I did so well that I have many around me wondering why I fucked up so bad in high school. Because of how I did, I have a pretty good chance at getting better financial aid and have been in the process of filling out more forms for next year. My biggest achievement? The GED instructor sent me an email the other day letting me know that I had received the highest points of any of her previous students. She also filled out a recommendation for me for the McElroy scholarship, which would be a free ride for a semester of college. Kind of neat.

My score, with 410 passing and 800 as highest score are as follows.

Reading – 760
Writing – 470
Mathematics – 550
Science – 760
Social Studies – 620

I believe if I had retested writing, I would have done much better – but I never had the oppertunity. Anyways – just an update on that whole situation.

This space between us
Where wingless dreams fall earless
Will you not bear me witness
With your back to me now

Alright. You’ll have to forgive me, because at this point all I can really do is think about what’s going to happen and wait for it.

All these discussions this past weekend led me to more research on ISU’s JMC classes. ISU’s journalism coursework was set in to motion in 1905. It was the first journalism school offered in Iowa and one of the first in the nation. Greenlee is located in Hamilton Hall.

On the other hand, Iowa’s new Adler building is a massive stride in trying to compete with ISU’s program. It’s a brand new facility (Constructed January, ’05).

This is dumb. I just need to pick a place. It doesn’t matter, they’re both going to be exceptional schools anyways.

It seemed so unnerving
Still somehow deserving
That she could hold my heart so tightly
And still not see me here, oh
