Sonic Unleashed

Kotaku posted an article a few days ago that was supposedly in-game footage of Sonic Unleashed for the next-gen consoles – and shortly there-after receieved a letter from Sega’s lawyers requesting the content be removed.

For those of you that don’t spend a lot of time in internet land (or lack common sense), this was basically confirmation that the content was in fact authentic.

Okay, like everyone I played Nintendo followed by the SNES when I was younger, but not my own – I had a Sega Genesis (Masterdrive). Sonic was my Mario but he’s been sucking it up at the next-gen scene. Have you seen Sonic Galaxies yet? Didn’t think so.

What’s exciting about this? They decided to do a scroller, the way Sonic’s meant to be played. But it’s not all about speed, it’s all about timing. This is like a revamped Sonic game of old, and even the music is more in tune with how the older games sounded. I’m pretty pumped to see where this game might go. Some classic gameplay with some new tricks in the graphics and physics department? Yeah. This could be good.

Updates – Site, music, & games, oh my??

  • LucasJ.Net has a new look. Not much done with it because it’s really not in use currently. Also – Postblink has a new look which you probably know unless you’re viewing this from my facebook feed. I’ve also cleaned up all the plugins – updated & deleted ones I’m not using. Apparently Akismet’s been working over time. It’s caught 46,245 spam comments. Time to delete that mess.
  • Death Cab for Cutie has a new album coming out May 13TH. If you’ve viewed my Last.FM page lately, you’ll see that I’ve been listening to A LOT of Death Cab for the past week or so. I’m really looking forward to this new album – I’m  not even going to download any leaks or buy on itunes for this one. CD quality for the win.
  • The new Jack’s Mannequin album has unfortunately been delayed. Bummer. Speaking of which. . . Warped 08 anyone? Some decent bands this year. (Supposedly it’ll be even better in 2009 though, if you’ve read the Kevin Lyman AP Chat are interested in the possiblities mentioned.)
  • I’ve finished skate. for the PS3. I liked the game a lot, even as hard as it was to get past the occasional frame rate drops. Supposedly you don’t see them on the 360 version though. (Come on devs! Write for the stronger system and then port…)
  • As long as we’re going over games. . . I’ve finished Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune as well. Not quite done with Devil May Cry 4 but getting close. May put up some reviews on those, I haven’t really been disappointed with any of the games I’ve got for the PS3 yet. I also finally sorted out my preorders for Grand Theft Auto 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Time to concentrate on school for a while before those get here, obviously.
  • And tomorrow it’s time to do some spring cleaning. On that note, I’ve gotta hit the sack.

Updates?

It’s not much fun to write in a blog when you’re always stuck at home because of the weather or continually writing for school – so I apologize for the lack of creative thinking in here. Latest updates? None – it snowed at the beginning of the week for the billionth time in a row.

What’s kept me occupied? My PS3. When I’m not busy with school, lately I’ve been playing Devil May Cry 4. If you’re looking for something to tide you over until the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 or Grand Theft Auto 4, check it out.

And last but not least, if you’d like to stalk me web 2.0 style (let’s be honest, could you really resist?), you can check out my updates at twitter. Yes, I’ll actually use it from now on.

Anyways, the debates on in a bit here. Gobama ’08.

All The Jack-o’s Are Whack-o’s

Okay. I think Jack Thompson has finally lost it all. I knew he was crazy, but this is ridiculous. He was the first of a few media-whores to immediately blame the Virginia Tech tragedy on violent video games. He did this within 48 hours of the incident… First let’s go over a list of materials found in the shooter’s room according to a search warrent.

• Chain from top left closet shelf
• Folding knife & combination padlock
• Compaq computer from desktop
• Assorted documents, notepads, writings from desktop
• Combination lock
• Dremel tool and case
• Nine books, two notebooks, envelopes, from top shelf
• Assorted books & pads from lower shelf
• Compact discs from desktops
• Items from desktop & drawers: winchester multi tool, 3 notebooks, mail, checks, credit card
• Items from 2nd door: Kodak digital camera, Citibank statement
• Two cases of compact discs from dresser top
• Drive: Seagate: 80 Gb
• Six sheets of green computer paper
• Mirror with blue plastic housing
• Dremel tool box with receipt
• Dell Latitude service tag

Now as of yet, there’s been no mention of any such violent video games in the CD cases or on the computer hard drives. One of the students sharing a dorm common room has specifically said they have never seen Cho playing violent video games and that most of his time was spent typing away on papers. The only mention of games at all during this whole period has been Thompson’s irrational blaring that somebody had said he played Counterstrike in Highschool. Thompson has apparently gone and sent this note to Microsoft (Specifically Gates)…

‘Several Korean youths who knew Cho Seung Hui from his high school days said he was a fan of violent video games, particularly Counterstrike, a hugely popular online game published by Microsoft, in which players join terrorism or counterterrorism groups and try to shoot each other using all types of guns.’”

Mr. Gates, your company is potentially legally liable the harm done at Virginia Tech. Your game, a killing simulator, according to the news that used to be in the Post, trained him to enjoy killing and how to kill. You knew five years ago that your on-line game, Counterstrike, so clearly figured in the massacre by a student in Erfurt that the event and the game impacted the race for Chancellor in Germany at the time!

Yet, here you are, five years after “Erfurt,” still marketing Counterstrike. having done nothing to disable the server(s) for this mass murder simulator, and it looks like “Virginia Tech” is a consequence. There’s more going on in the world than Vista. Just ask the bereaved Virginia Tech families.

Mr. Gates, pull the plug on Counterstrike today, or do we need more dead to convince you? “Virginia Tech” was the 9-11 of school shootings, and it appears Microsoft is in the middle of it, in more ways than one.

What? Counterstrike was developed by Microsoft games? Since when? Well, actually, since 2004. Which would be after Cho graduated from high school. Previous to that, Counterstrike had only been published by Valve for the PC. So Cho never even played the Microsoft Xbox game (2004), most likely. Why is Jack Thompson so angry at someone who isn’t remotely responsible? I have no idea. Because he’s senile? Because he’s lost his mind? Because he wants more attention?

Now I suppose that writing about it just contributes to feeding his flame of attention, but people need to realize just how far off Thompson is. If you have any questions, just google him…

Peacefully yours,
A Counterstrike Gamer
